Gosnold is made up of the Elizabeth Islands, a chain stretching southwest from Woods Hole between Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound. Cuttyhunk, at the western end, holds the town’s only village, while most of the other islands remain largely undeveloped. The town takes its name from Bartholomew Gosnold, who landed here in 1602 and built a short-lived outpost.
